Fish fry was a success!

Thanks to everyone's efforts we earned over $700 for the boys of Troop 165 with today's fish fry- woohoo!  We appreciate everyone in the community that came out and supported the scouts today.

When you see them be sure and thank the following people:  Tanya for keeping things organized and straight, Kim for the fish preparation, Bo and Bill for all the cooking, Cheryl, Chris, Mary Beth, and Susan for taking care of the front and filling in where needed, the boys that helped serve, run, and clean up, and Doug for all that he does.  Good job!

We'll need everyone to turn out to help with the fish fry - be sure and let Mr. Doug know that you'll be there and where you can help out.

Thanks for helping make this another successful fund raiser for the troop!

Troop 165 Fish Fry coming up 8/24

This Troop runs on a shoestring budget. We do not want to increase dues. We hold several fundraisers during the year to help the Scouts raise money to go to Summer Camp. We only hold one fundraiser where the Troop receives any reward. That is our fish fry. Tickets are $8.00. For every  ticket sold the Scout receives $1.00. The rest of the profit goes to the Troop to help with expenses.

We have expenses few other Troops have. We have our own power bill.  Our own water bill. We have a Scout bus, a canoe trailer, 5 canoes, a scout trailer and our very own Scout Hut to meet in. All of which require money to operate.

Unlike a lot of Troops we do not have a financial supporter. We have to take care of ourselves. That is why this fundraiser is so important to us.

We ask that every parent volunteer at least 3 hours toward the fish fry.  ** Please **

August 5th @ 7pm is our planning meeting.

Please attend and help the scouts of Troop 165.

We already have a mound of dirt at the scout hut that is a perfect backdrop, so let's build an archery range!

We will be discussing this at the Committee mtg next week.  Be sure and be a part of the mtg!

We will need at least three adults that are not parents of the boy(s) up for a Board of Review to participate as members of the Board, so please be there for the boys next week.

Returned from summer camp!

Scoutmaster Doug and the boys of Troop 165 returned from summer camp today.  Everyone had a great time at camp this year, and Doug said that it was the best summer camp ever!

Many, many thanks to Aaron Roberts, David Wamer, Mr. Brown, and Scoutmaster Doug Clemens for taking the boys to Raven Knob this year!  The boys couldn't do this sort of thing without dedicated adults in our program.

Summer camp going well

Everyone found the dining hall quickly and have enjoyed the meals there.

Mr. Wamer was happy to see swimming, kayaking, snorkeling, canoeing, rowing, and sailing all going on at one time.  Great aquatics program at Raven Knob!

Call to Action campout was wet but great!

The boys had a good time despite the rain, and the talent contest Saturday night was a blast!  6 of our scouts went to this backpacking campout and enjoyed being there with about 2000 other scouts.  Not everyone backpacked in, which was interesting, but our scouts did things the right way!

Many thanks to Scoutmaster Doug and David Wamer for going on this campout with our scouts.

Good Merit Badge day

6 of our scouts and 3 of our adult leaders went to Griffin to be part of the Flint River Council's Merit Badge Day today.  Our scouts took Communication, Citizen in the Community, Citizen in the World, and Electronics and had a great time with all the scouts from other troops there.  David Holly taught the Communication merit badge to a room full of scouts, and Doug Clemens and Bo Miller taught the Plumbing merit badge to some scouts looking to learn.  Everybody enjoyed the Chick-fil-a sandwiches for lunch and made it back to the scout hut right on time.  Woohoo!

Good climbing and caving campout this weekend!

The boys of Troop 165 travelled to NW Georgia to go climbing and caving near Rocktown.  The rappelled about 80' down a rock, then climbed down in to a cave and explored one of the few remaining "wild" caves out there with their guide and fellow scouter Tommy Ivey.  The boys had a blast crawling through muddy tunnels, squeezing through a z-turn, and learning about how to safely explore a cave.

Many thanks to Scoutmaster Doug, David Wamer, Glen Armstrong, Ryan, and Tommy Ivey for taking our scouts on this adventure.  It was a life-changing experience!

Great climbing and rappelling campout!

The boys of Troop 165 joined with Troop 62 and Troop 64 for a great climbing and rappelling campout down at the Gerald I. Lawhorn Scout Base this weekend.  The had a great time climbing up and rappelling down the 60 foot tall wall they have down there, and many of our scouts got to zip line in the dark Saturday night!  Everybody stayed warm despite the cold temperatures at night (32, brrrr), and the boys all came back to the scout hut tired but happy.  ASPL Robbie did a great job leading the boys through the many activities of the weekend, and everybody ate well.

Many, many thanks to Doug Clemens, Aaron Roberts, and David Wamer for going with the boys on this campout!  (Check back for more pictures and maybe a video from the campout soon...)

Great Crossover from Pack 165 tonight!

4 of Pack 165's Webelos crossed over to our troop tonight - woohoo!  Our older scouts welcomed them by changing out their epaulets and scarves and Scoutmaster Doug Clemens presented them with the Boy Scout handbooks they will be using along the trail to Eagle Scout.  These 4 scouts all earned their Arrows of Light and look to be good Boy Scouts, so be sure and welcome them when you see them.

Good Pinewood Test&Tune today!

Troop 165 held it's annual Pinewood Test&Tune on 1/12/13. The boys that came out to run their cars on the track had a great time and were able to work out some of the bugs. Good job!

Sunday, January 6, 2013

Pinewood Test&Tune this Saturday 1/12 9:00am-12:00pm

Troop 165's annual Pinewood Test&Tune will be this Saturday from 9:00am until around 12:00pm.  We are looking forward to a good turnout from Pack 165 and any other Packs that would like to come and run their Pinewood Derby cars on our aluminum track at the scout hut.  No competitions, just fun running your car on the track to make sure it's ready to race.

We look forward to seeing you at the scout hut!

2 meetings this week

OK, everybody, welcome to 2013!  We are getting back in to the "routine" by having meetings this week.

Our monthly committee meeting is Monday 1/7/13 at 7:00pm via telephone conference.  Ask Scoutmaster Doug or Committee Chair Chris Smith for the number and passcode.

And Tuesday night is our regularly scheduled troop meeting at 7:00pm at the scout hut.  The scouts need to be in Class A uniforms unless otherwise advised by the Senior Patrol Leader.  If your son signed up for a Board of Review it will happen Tuesday night (we'll need some parents available to help sit on the board with our Committee Chair).

Summer camp $75 deposits are due on 1/8/13.  Summer camp will be at Raven Knob Scout Reservation again this year, a place that has been awesome every year that we have gone.  Everything is well-planned, the staff there has run the camp for years, and the boys love the activities and location.  Sign up and make your deposit this Tuesday night!

Note:  We will need adults to go on this with us, so if you could select your summer leave and be available to go with us we would appreciate it.  Please talk to Scoutmaster Doug Clemens or Committee Chair Chris Smith about this great opportunity to help the Troop!

Thanks, and we look forward to talking to you and seeing you this week!

Summer camp $75 deposit due 1/8

Our summer camp at Raven Knob is one of the most awesome summer camps out there.  It's time to make the deposits of money with the Raven Knob people so the boys can be all set for camp this summer.

Please turn in your $75 deposit by 1/8 to make sure your son can go to scout camp.  If you will be using money from your scout account please fill out the scout account use form so our treasurer can keep track of how the money needs to be moved around and accounted for.

If you have any questions contact Mr. Doug or the Swindells.  Thanks!
